Packing my carry-on bag for the plane.

These are my essential tools of the trade.  The tripods and big stuff go in the cargo but this stays with me.

  • Canon 5D Mark IV Camera
  • Canon 5D Mark III Camera
  • Canon 100mm Macro Lens (one of the sharpest lenses ever)
  • Canon 28-70 Lens
  • Canon 17-40 Lens (definitely my favourite lens)
  • Canon 70-200 Lens
  • 2x Profoto B1 Mono Heads
  • 6x Profoto Batteries
  • B&W P7 Headphones (can't survive the flight without my music)
  • Prescription Glasses (yes the eyesight ain't what it used to be)

2018-02-02 On the road again ...

cellphoneontheroad.jpg

A commercial photographer's life is lived mostly on the road or in the air these days.  Limpopo today, next week will be mostly Gauteng and then off to KwaZulu-Natal.  This photo was taken from the car earlier, using my phone.

Shooting in and around Malelane today.  For those of you who have never been to South Africa, Malelane is a town in Limpopo on the border of the Kruger National Park.

Check it out in Google Maps if you want.

We were on the road at 02:00 this morning and won't be home until late.

2018-02-01 Discovery - Way to start the year ...

Backing up my work for January, I came across some fun photos of Chad le Clos & Wayde van Niekerk from my first shoot of the year.

What great guys!  Some celebrities still know how to keep it real.

The shoot for our client Discovery went really well, the models were great, and may I just say - Profoto kicks arse!

2018-01-30 - Tell Me Why ...

It always feels good to see that accreditation in print, especially when it's both a surprise and something worthwhile.  A recent download of non-fiction for younger readers revealed a whole series with some of my older photos used on the covers.

Check out the Tell Me Why? ebooks in the Google Play store.

2015-06-29 SEFA 2015- Duvha Foundry

Duvha Foundry is impossible to locate on your GPS.

But if you manage to find it! Wow, what a gem.

This place is a complete overload of your senses . It is hot, noisy and visually unreal. The colours, people and dust are some of the ingredients for amazing photography.

This is part of a project for SEFA 2015 annual report. Duvha Foundry is situated in JHB. They manufacture massive castings for the mining and industrial sector.

Step one: make the mold.

Step two: melt the steel.

Step three: cast.

Step four: finish and polish the casts.

Older technology works better in a dirty and dusty environment. My trusted Profoto 7B packs synced to my camera with an old fashioned sync lead is the way to go.

We tried our Pocket wizards PLUS III and Profoto Air remotes but the interference of all the electricity and steel was to much. The lights were put on heavy Manfrotto stands to keep them safe.

70-200 mm Canon lens was used for most of the shots, the lens giving me the necessary distance from the subject matter in a dangerous environment. Flying molten steel and sparks and camera equipment are not good friends.

This lens also helps with the depth of field and puts the background out of focus.
